All good ideas. Here in the Philippines almost everyone leaves lights blazing but I am an awkward SOB and when we go to bed we are in pitch black. I can operate better that way and feel it gives me an edge. Had very wealthy friends who had good guard dogs, but they were poisoned and the gunmen got in, thankfully our friends were not home
Dogs are no protection whatsoever. The most they can do - if they hear it - is to alert you to possible intruder/s too easy to take out - poisoned or a “silent pop” .. You literally need several layers of security as l have. It is a shame indeed that here in Britain, we do not have the 2A ..
Agreed. Dogs do offer protection in the form of an alert if it’s indoors and an intruder comes prowling around outside. They can also deter crimes of opportunity. They won’t deter anyone who knows what they’re doing.
Dogs' purpose is as an alert. If you can fence in the yard, geese work astoundingly well.
I designed the security for an international airport; my team also did the security design for the World Bank. You're correct, the purpose of physical security is to encourage secure behavior and discourage non-secure behavior. Security is about behavior, not technology.
My other half can see in the dark like an owl. I swear he’s got the same rod density! He too feels he has an edge being able to move about silently in pitch blackness.
Good tips, thanks. I live in the country and probably rely too much on guns, but all my neighbors have guns as well. During deer season you hear them going off all the time. We often leave our keys in the cars and rarely lock the doors of our house. I can't remember hearing of a break in for miles around in the three decades I've lived here. I've gotten soft, lol.
Thank you! We have an alarm but need to work on the deterrent angle. We're not all that far from a high crime area (we're in a border state so I'm sure you can imagine). At the rate people are coming over, even quiet areas aren't truly safe.

The only deterrent l want is failsafe! Anything else is null and void.
The greatest enemy of the "good" is the "Perfect." Lower your standards
Yup. This is what we say, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.”

Article coming up on properly using cheap night vision.
Fantastic. Thank you for the great info on deterrence, and links or images to recommended products.
You’re welcome.
Stick around, this one goes deep.
This article is what we call “week one day one.” material.
By the end, they’ll need a cruise missile to get you out of your house.

That’s what happened in South Africa and Rhodesia.
Don’t get too soft.
Excellent post, Malignant. I saved it!
Thank you!
I hope it helps.
It will! I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Great article. I love the bees idea.

You might have had enough coffee today already.
